Bring your skills. Follow their curiosity.
Ōhinemahuta Nature School is looking for capable, enthusiastic adults to join our small team as 2027 approaches. We offer child-led outdoor learning where tamariki can explore, take thoughtful risks, develop practical skills and build confidence in nature.
We run on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 28 weeks a year. You’re welcome to apply for either day or both, as part of our regular or relief team.

- Support tamariki in a child-led environment, encouraging curiosity, independence and respect for self, others and nature.
- Plan and lead engaging Discovery Basics sessions and specialist afternoon workshops, drawing on your own skills and interests.
- Confidently lead morning and afternoon hui, including karakia, waiata and group discussions.
- Take initiative, make sound decisions and give clear direction when a situation calls for leadership.
- Actively supervise children in varied outdoor environments, using good judgement to support their safety and wellbeing.
- Record meaningful observations of children’s learning and experiences for our daily parent updates.
- Take photos and videos, and help to create social media content that shares our days while respecting each child’s privacy preferences.
- Work collaboratively with the team to keep each session running smoothly, bringing confidence, initiative and a calm, capable presence to the group.
There may also be opportunities to drive our nature school van. This includes transporting children, communicating with families, and collecting, cleaning, refuelling and returning the vehicle.
Who we’re looking for
We welcome different backgrounds. What matters is the care, skills and judgement you bring to our days together.
- A thoughtful approach to tamariki. You can guide children with warmth and confidence, giving them space to explore.
- Skills you enjoy sharing. You bring practical, outdoor or creative interests, and can plan and lead activities around them.
- A calm, capable presence. You communicate clearly, take initiative, work well alongside others and have a hands-on, collaborative attitude.
First aid & suitability checks
You’ll need a current first aid certificate and be willing to complete police vetting.
Other skills we value
Strong te reo Māori and confidence leading karakia and waiata are highly valued. A clean, full driver licence and willingness to drive the van are a significant advantage.
Teaching qualifications and outdoor education experience are welcome, but not essential.
Sound like your kind of day?
If you enjoy learning alongside children and getting stuck in, whatever the weather, we’d love to hear from you.
